Zachtronics’ latest release is, surprisingly, a version of the card game Nerts! – a real-time, competitive game where players have to frantically shuffle, sort, and clear their own decks of playing cards. Nerts! Online is a relatively skeletal adaptation, but the team has focused on the right things by creating a tactile, speedy card game with a clear and attractive interface.
While there’s a simple one-screen tutorial, and you can practice alone in an empty lobby, this is a multiplayerfocused game that you’ll either play online with chums or strangers. I learnt the rules (they’re not too difficult), and played a few practice games to get the hang of things, but even so, this has been an embarrassing – albeit enjoyable – trial by fire.
