Il s’attendait à tout sauf à ce succès. Brady Corbet pensait même que son troisième long-métrage serait « controversé » en raison de sa durée. En trois heures et trente-quatre minutes (entracte compris), le jeune réalisateur de Scottsdale (États-Unis) raconte la vie de Laszlo Toth, un architecte hongrois survivant de la Shoah qui s’exile aux États-Unis dans l’espoir de vivre son rêve américain. « Laszlo Toth est un nom ultra commun en Hongrie, l’équivalent de John Smith ici. Rien à voir avec le géologue australien connu pour avoir vandalisé à coups de marteau la “Pietà” de Michel-Ange, explique-t-il.
