A deep rumble resonates in my chest and stirs me from a peaceful sleep as a second sends a shiver up my spine and hitches my breath. It is close—so close I swear I can hear it breathe between bellows. Piercing the silence of the night, a majestic lion calls out into the darkness and is answered from the shadows. Snuggling deeper into the warmth of my sleeping bag, a smile fueled by the fires of excitement spreads across my face. Raw and untamed, this is what I yearned for; this is Africa. It took two full days of travel before we finally arrived. Stepping off the plane, the warm air embraced me like an old friend. It was a return to Africa for both of us, but with new countries…
