“Glad they’re opening up the awfulness!”—Jane Lindamood A RESCUE IN PROGRESS This month’s photos come from a homeowner struck by the recent REMUDDLING column that showed a 1919 Foursquare “improved” to keep up with trends ca. 1955, as published in a remodeling book. [See OHJ June 2024] “The article really spoke to me,” says Jessica Hellriegel. Her house, in a Chicago suburb, had suffered similar treatment. “We purchased our 1897 Queen Anne in 2022 and have been working to restore it,” she tells us. Changes had been made over time to “de-Victorianize” the house. “Some were made in 1955, the same year [that the cited home-improvement book was published].” The Hellriegels have photos that show the modifications timeline.
