Like an old-fashioned barn raising, an old-house “unveiling” is a coordinated event that brings neighbors together to strip replacement siding from a historic house. Bob Yapp of Preservation Resources says that underneath, “we usually find excellent clapboard, trim, decorative wood shingles, and all the wonderful textures these materials bring to the look and feel of an old house.” If your house or another in your neighborhood is a candidate for an unveiling, try reaching out for volunteers on a community Facebook page or through the local historical society or preservation board. Yapp, who is often hired to lead unveilings, says the property owner usually provides a roll-off container sized for the job; volunteers arrive armed with prybars, hammers, and masks.
