A unique property combines the ca. 1693 Hills–Galloway House, a doomed structure relocated from Connecticut, with the ca. 1884 Nichols House, a Victorian Italianate.

SAVANNAH’S Raised Stoops When the Galloways began to reassemble the Hills House, the city of Savannah viewed the project as new construction. Thus, it had to meet the historic district’s particular zoning and setback require ments. “That included raising • the house above the street level, a signature of old houses in Savannah,” Peter Galloway says. “Those raised stoops were built because the streets were once muddy.” The house was not raised when it stood in Connecticut. The city • also insisted that the street entry have a portico. The new portico’s Corinthian columns and dentil mouldings give the house the dignity it likely had when it was built, before later modifications.
