Delaying their long-anticipated remodeling for years meant that this design-savvy family had time to embrace the best aspects of the era.

My husband, Rodney, and I moved into our Mid-century Modern ranch just three months after we were married, in 1992. The house was built in 1963 for the owners of a 43-acre turkey farm and was the first house in the neighborhood, a small residential community on the edge of Tacoma, Washington. The interior had classic mid-century sloped ceilings and the original geometric windows, some with amber rondel glass in the top courses. As an architect, I immediately had visions for a remodeling but the dream took a back seat to raising our family, which grew to include our two children Nick and Leah, now in their twenties.
