When he bought Bassett & Vollum, in 1992, he had no experience in hand-printing wallpaper. He learned the craft of screen printing after the sale, working nights with the two previous owners. “I like the pattern end of it,” he says. “Patterns just fall naturally for me. And I like the history, too.” Bassett & Vollum was founded in 1936 in Chicago by Emile Bassett and George Vollum. A third partner, George Funke, brought hand-blocked patterns from France and commissioned national and international designers—notably Chicagoan Edgar Miller—to design new collections.
