”When we bought the house,” says the owner, “there was no kitchen, just a few so-so appliances in an alcove.” It took two renovations 26 years apart to remedy changes made in the 1920s, putting the kitchen back into the original keeping room. The new layout places the kitchen table in front of the fireplace, separated from the working zone by a well proportioned island. Family and friends gather here during Colonial dinners held monthly, for which the owners cook in the fireplace.
Cabinets were made from antique pine boards that came from old barns reclaimed by Amish builders. The gentle finish of the blue-green cabinets looks convincingly old with paint that appears worn at the edges. This patina was achieved by Robert Dionne, a fine artist and decorative painter who…
