COMMUNICATION PLAZA A tribute to Yamaha’s heritage

For any motorcycle enthusiast, a visit to Iwata in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan is not complete without stopping by the Yamaha Communication Plaza, a three-floored building that houses not just significant motorcycles, but marine products, cars, various engines, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles, jet-skis, bicycles, power products, industrial robots and electrical equipment. We’ll concentrate on the bikes.

Currently, there are about forty models on display, tracing Yamaha’s two-wheeled heritage from the seminal YB-1 of 1955. Of course, with Yamaha’s continued commitment to racing, there is a mouth-watering display of competition machinery, beginning with the YA-1 that won the famous Asama Mountain race in 1955, right through to current MotoGP machinery. As well, there is a smaller collection of off-road racers. There is also a number of simulators, rideable models, design and technology exhibitions, and the impressive Plaza Lounge with publications, historical videos and a magazine library. Entry is free, but it always pays to check the web site as opening times vary according to seasons and holidays.
