Once every month, Rare has a meeting about the immortalisation of community accomplishments. “One of the things we said early on, around the time of the prototype, was that it would be great if Sea Of Thieves didn’t have a Blackbeard,” Craig Duncan says. “What if the players became the immortal legends?”
In practice, this has sometimes simply meant calling out the achievements of players in Rare’s blogs: the two pirates who were each sick 61 times in-game over the festive period, for instance, or the captain who fired himself from a cannon on 1,368 occasions over the space of just four weeks.
This year, though, Rare has stepped up the recognition. January’s Legends Of The Sea update filled the map with Easter eggs that commemorated famous players and their deeds. You…
