Who wants to watch a movie all about jazz drumming, then? Hands up, now. Try not to crush each other in the storm of sheer eagerness. Okay, it’s fair to say that the surface level of director Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash does little to entice: a young, gifted drummer enrols at a music conservatoire and meets an uncompromising mentor. Steady, now. But – those chortling at our little sneer – there’s plenty of portent in the paradiddles, and you’ll be agreeing with the apparent hype before the first chapter is halfway through. Aside from being a stylish and visceral movie bristling with energetic editing, Whiplash is a meditation on what it takes to be the best. Not just great; the best.
