A type 1 diabetes patient came up with a lifesaving tech innovation—and now she’s sharing it for free.

FOR THE MILLION-PLUS Americans with type 1 diabetes, maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is a never-ending life-or-death challenge. And while it’s enough of a hassle during the day, it can be even more daunting at night. Many people with the disease use a continuous glucose monitor that sounds an alarm if levels fall too low. But for those who aren’t stirred by the alerts when they’re sleeping, that’s not always enough. So-called dead-inbed syndrome is the grim phrase that refers to type 1 diabetes sufferers perishing in the night, a fate that accounts for 6 percent of all deaths in adults under 40 with the disease.
