LAST YEAR 42-year-old Tiffany Lipps of Amelia, Ohio, was happily married, busy raising her four children, when a bomb exploded in her life: Keith, her husband of 14 years, came out as transgender. Keith took the name Venessa and the pronoun she, began a regimen of hormone therapy, and set out on a journey toward becoming the person she’d always known herself to be. Though Tiffany loves her partner deeply, the new reality sent her reeling, and she’s grown anxious and depressed. “My husband disappeared, and this other woman entered our marriage,” she says. “It’s like my own identity has come into question.” To help regain her sense of self and release some of her complicated feelings, she sought the counsel of O life coach Martha Beck.
