Swapping rotary motors into piston-powered cars has been an everyday event since Mazda made Dr Felix Wankel’s spinning triangles commonplace. On the other hand, going the other way and dropping piston power into rotary-powered vehicles is far less common. However, that’s exactly what Dunedin’s Michael Scholten has done, by slinging an LS9 into a Mazda RX-4. The car was previously campaigned in rotary guise by Matt Buttimore, before being purchased as a roller. That hasn’t stopped Michael from reworking the rear end, including all new tubs. The engine he purchased was from a Marathon boat and runs a roller cam in conjunction with a custom turbo set-up. This is backed by a Rossler trans with bolt-together Neal Chance torque converter.
