I’m sitting, appropriately enough, in an emergency exit seat. The sort that most airlines now make you pay extra for, as if it’s a privilege to be asked before take-off if all your limbs are in working order and if, ‘in the unlikely event of an emergency’, you’re willing to battle with a bulky door and face the screaming unknown, while those in other, less expensive rows are safely cowering in the brace position. In fact, I’m cowering right now. Hiding behind a large protective screen – my handbag – and googling at top speed, making the most of the last few remaining wifi minutes before the admonition comes: ‘Madam, please put away your device!’ Google Google Google.
