The view from Sarah’s balcony is bright and sunny, but dark clouds are looming

Saturday morning, and I step out onto my balcony, coffee in hand. The street is already full of parents, kids and dogs. Everyone, including the canines, looks healthy and relaxed. Everyone, excluding the canines, is wearing beige or white cotton, and blue jeans. Everyone could be right out of an ad for organic vegetable juice or a summer clothing campaign for GAP. There are yellow balloons bobbing over the rooftops, and a man selling dairy-free, fat-free vanilla ice cream from a van. This isn’t the Berlin I’ve known and loved. All this positivity and early rising, this bounding and beaming, makes me nervous. Where are the wearers of black? Where are the old?
