IN THE GUT New research indicates there is a gut-brain connection in the development of Parkinson’s disease. By studying roundworms that had been genetically engineered to produce alphasynuclein, a protein that is linked to the development of Parkinson’s, researchers found that the probiotic Bacillus subtilis was the most effective in fighting the protein. “The results from this study are exciting as they show a link between bacteria in the gut and the protein at the heart of Parkinson’s,” says research manager Beckie Port. “Studies that identify bacteria that are beneficial in Parkinson’s have the potential to not only improve symptoms, but could even protect people from developing it in the first place.” BEAT THE BUGS The roots of echinacea have long been used to improve immune defence and relieve symptoms…
