When I started my first office job, straight out of school at 17, I sat next to the delightful Hazel Boyd. She was slim, blonde, kind and 32. She had two children and was married to Gordon. She lived in a lovely house, in a smart area (whereas we resided in a council flat, in a not-so-smart area), and I thought she was ancient. When she came into work one day, and announced she was pregnant with her third child, I nearly had a coronary. People still have sex at 32? I thought I would vomit in my mouth – I found the very thought quite disgusting.
