DRIVING AN American car in Detroit should be an exercise in invisibility. Wanna stand out there? Drive a Porsche. Within 30 minutes of being on the road in the Motor City, our Malibu starts causing a fuss. As photographer LaPalme sets up a shot, a woman also driving a 2008 Malibu, begins to circle. As she jabs at the buttons on her cell-phone, it’s clear she’s in shock—shock!—to see someone else driving a new Malibu just days after it went on sale. On this cold, gray morning, we go around Lake Erie and cross into Ohio, where we notice a significant police presence.
