GIVEN A CHOICE of cardinal compass points to explore, this Nordic-German gravitates toward “N.” I’m happiest in cooler weather, and our northernmost route traces my home-address history, from Memphis where my parents still live to my alma mater in Champaign, Illinois, my birthplace (Chicago), and passing near other Midwestern towns my family’s called home; so this adventure promises to be a nostalgiafest. But did you ever hear the old saying, “You can never go home again”? Memphis starts out great, though it’s nothing like I remember. The forlorn downtown now pulses with life as vintage warehouses are converted into chichi lofts and art galleries. A big night out on Beale Street is just the thing to launch this odyssey.
