letter of the month pipe dream The authorities have been less than supportive of my hobby of piloting my Mazda3 hatchback down Route 295 like a guided missile, and my latest summons has led me to conclude that my need for speed has outgrown the bounds of local roads and highways. We’re often asked at a certain age, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Those who volunteer to be engineers, accountants, and doctors receive praise and appropriate schooling to guide them to such careers. Others who speak of being rock stars, stuntmen, and race-car drivers get a placating pat on the head, a sideways glance, and encouragement toward a more practical and orthodox career.
