WHAT IS IT ABOUT “MINIATURE" THAT IS SO COMPELLING? For centuries, artisans have scaled down and crafted objects of cultural or personal significance — boats and ships included. Model seafaring vessels have been found in archaeological digs dating back to 2000 BC. The historical record indicates that these miniatures were used as burial and votive offerings, pieces of art, and yes, even toys. Primitive models, while not necessarily accurate in scale or design, nevertheless provide great insight into the shipbuilding technology of ancient times. These handcrafted replicas help us better understand the scope of our maritime ancestors and their vessels. In the United States, model ship crafting really gathered steam in the 1920s. E.
