What is one of your favorite car memories? THE DUNE BUGGY! Those fat-tired, squat-bodied, life-sized Matchbox cars have been jaunting around beaches for more than 60 years, skittering on the sand as well as off-road racing tracks. These iconic examples of the Southern California "fun in the sun" lifestyle remain a favorite pastime for auto enthusiasts and car collectors to this day. Los Angeles beaches of the 60s were home to surfers, bodybuilders, and also dune buggies. Garage hobbyists would outfit old car chassis with lunky tires and race around in the sand. Many of these cruisers were built using the frame of the popular VW Beetle. Beetles were easy to find at junkyards and their rear-engine placement helped with traction on the beach.
