MARTIN BIRCH 1948-2020

EVERYONE AT METAL Hammer was saddened last month by the news that legendary rock and metal producer and engineer Martin Birch had died aged 71. As well as producing a total of 10 Iron Maiden records across the 80s and early 90s, starting with 1981’s Killers, Martin was also the man behind classic albums including Black Sabbath’s Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules, Deep Purple’s In Rock and Machine Head and releases by Whitesnake, Blue Öyster Cult, Fleetwood Mac and Rainbow, amongst others. “He was just absolutely brilliant,” said Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris in a statement. “He wasn’t just a producer, he was a hands-on engineer too, so he knew how to get a great sound.
