KNOW YOUR ENEMY
Ticks, which are eight-legged arachnids, cannot fly or jump. They stand in wait at the edges of grasses and shrubs, waving their arms like those inflatable dancing men at car lots, and latch on to hosts as they brush past. Once on a host, they crawl upward toward the head, where the skin is thinner and there are more blood vessels to tap. This is one good reason to be diligent about repellent on your lower half.
WEAR PROTECTION
The best repellent strategy is to wear permethrin-treated clothing or use a spray on your skin that contains DEET. Tuck your pants into your socks and your shirt into your pants when hiking, camping, gardening, or hunting to create roadblocks for the upward-traveling arachnids.
