As Toyota ventured into luxury boating with a spectacular one-off, Lexus-inspired yacht, we got a glimpse of the marque’s evolving design sensibility.

A FEW YEARS AGO, WHEN AKIO TOYODA, PRESIDENT OF TOYOTA Motor Corp., was invited to test the new offerings from the company’s marine department, the master driver and car enthusiast was stunned. The yachts in development not only featured impressive powertrains and hulls designed to enhance handling and stability, but they also fit into Toyoda’s idea of the Lexus brand. This revelation resulted in a multiyear project to bring to life a Lexus-inspired yacht that expands the brand into the realms of lifestyle and recreation. And the result of these efforts is the Lexus Sport Yacht. Built in collaboration with Marquis Yachts LLC, a US-based yacht manufacturer, the new creation is constructed largely of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, the same kind found in the world’s top supercars, including Lexus’ own LFA.
