Henrico County was created in 1634 as one of the 8 original shires of Virginia and extended from Charles City County indefinitely westward. It is located in the eastern portion of the state. The City of Richmond was located within its boundaries until 1842 when it was spun off. The County now completely surrounds the city. Henrico County is the parent in whole or part to the counties of: Goochland, Albemarle, Buckingham, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Nelson, Powhatan, and Appomattox.
