Reeling from an unspeakable act of violence, Marla turns up in Santorini stippled in bruises and sorrow. As she slowly begins to emerge from the stupor of her trauma, a look back at the two years leading up to this moment reveals the complex and hidden ways in which love can turn toxic. Not only must Marla come to terms with her abusive boyfriend James's behavior, but she also has to reconcile the complicated friendships and expectations that left her so primed and vulnerable to begin with.
Surprisingly, though, it's not the gradual and increasingly cruel abuse from James that sent Marla fleeing to Greece in the first place. It's the startling sexual assault from an unexpected man that's the catalyst Marla needed to finally walk away from a life that had slowly been killing her.
