CLIMBING PLANTS ADD height to a garden border as they scramble up a support, such as a wigwam or trellis. Reaching for the sky in the vegetable plot, peas and beans make an attractive feature, with delicate flowers followed by swelling pods to pick for the table. Supports for climbers can be simply made with commonplace materials already available in most gardens, such as sticks, canes, lengths of wood and prunings. A GREEN WINDOW Longer branches or poles of coppiced wood, such as hazel, are ideal as supports and are often flexible, allowing interesting shapes to be created. Here, a circular shape tied between two wigwams frames an allotment greenhouse and the countryside beyond. If the wood to hand is too rigid, a straight-sided shape would also work.
