Unlike typical racing histories focused solely on track achievements and car specs, Neil Smith’s On the Prowl (June 2024) is a comprehensive and visually stunning chronicle of the Walkinshaw Jaguar sports car team that sets a new standard in motorsport literature. While comparable books cover technical specifications or race victories, Smith’s volume uniquely captures the engineering ingenuity and human drama behind the team’s success. When the hefty package arrived from Bull Publishing in September, I knew this would be different from the typical (usually paperback) book recommended for the Journal’s review. The hefty hardcover tome, featuring 664 photographs across 528 glossy pages, demands to be displayed and enjoyed leisurely rather than quickly read once and shelved.
