In July 2023, the Federal Government of Canada initiated the new Clean Fuels Regulation (CFR) framework to replace the previous Federal Fuel Regulations. The CFR regulations are far more complicated, as they include carbon trading credit aspects, but the general idea is to lower the Carbon Intensity (CI) of the gasoline, diesel and heating fuels provided to consumers. The new CFR necessitates the increased use of renewable fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel to lower the CI of their products. It encourages producers to reduce carbon emissions at the oil production and processing stage. It also is designed to increase electric vehicle sales.
