Venice is an apparition in a burst of sunlight under the wing of the aeroplane. It rises out of water on a patchwork of more than 100 Italian islands in the middle of a swampy lagoon on the Adriatic Sea. There is an improbable strangeness to this place built stone upon stone, menaced by rising tides, supported by centuries-old subterranean piers and timbers. How can it exist at all? Venice has been sinking for decades and the newly imposed nightly tourist tax has not turned back floods of visitors swamping the dwindling resident population of about 50,000 people on the main island.
