Seldom are airport hotels a holiday highlight, with solid soundproofing and a half-decent restaurant often the best a transiting traveller can hope for. But that's changing, as I discover at the new Te Arikinui Pullman Auckland Airport. Just 100 metres from the terminal, the hotel's unique curvilinear design – a tower of glass and terracotta tiles – has an instant calming effect when I arrive after an action-packed Auckland city break. But Auckland Airport's first five-star sleep wasn't only designed to put weary travellers at ease. The first hint is in the name – which was gifted by the late Māori King Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII. Te Arikinui means ‘Supreme Ariki’ or ‘Supreme Paramount Chief’.
