WHERE IS IT? Named for the Arabic word meaning ‘safe haven’, La Mamounia is a former royal palace built in the 18th century. It sits opposite Marrakech's largest mosque, Kutubiyya Mosque, located in the city's south-west quarter. WHY WE LOVE IT Since opening nearly a century ago, La Mamounia has played muse to generations of artists and creatives. The hotel, which consists of sumptuous suites and riads, seamlessly blends the Islamic architectural features of the building (such as elaborate geometric mosaics and arabesque stucco reliefs) with Art Deco design sensibilities. Inside, an incredible play of light evokes Marrakech's luminous cityscapes: stained glass, statement chandeliers inspired by Berber jewellery and Moroccan lanterns that project rich colours and patterns onto the walls.
