While you may never have the opportunity to bring 13,000 tons of western coal downhill into Durand, Michigan praying to God that you will be able to "get this thing stopped before I pass the red signal," my goal is to put you in the seat across the cab, with guys who did this on a daily basis, and just enjoy the experience! For me having been a railroader for 45-years was a gift and a childhood dream come true; now my friends and I would love to share these experiences with you! During the last 15-years of my railroad career and since my retirement in December 2011, I have become radically aware of just how much railroading has changed! One day it occured to me that young railroaders and railfans today will NEVER experience REAL RAILROADING! Hopefully this volume will give you all a glimpse of what railroad employees in North America experienced, and you will note the changes that have taken place, for better or worse, as the industry has modernized.
