Creating modern family spaces in older houses is always a challenge. We want to respect period charm as we add the practicalities, which is tricky when dealing with functional spaces such as the bathroom pictured here.
Located in one of Melbourne’s wide, leafy suburban streets, the house is a California bungalow full of 1930s details. The ensuite off the main bedroom was part of a larger renovation by DX Architects in conjunction with builder JMBC. Interior designer Gillianne Griffiths of Studio Griffiths was then brought in to sort the interiors. Her design embraced many of the original elements, including the ornate ceilings, leadlight windows and glass door panels, while contemporising the home to suit the family.
