Never underestimate the power of winter flowers — they can brighten your mood on even the dullest day. If your garden is lacking colour through the cooler months, be sure to plant some classic camellias. The winter- and spring-flowering japonica types make beautiful hedges, screens or feature plants.
You might also like to plant drifts of hellebores (above) or miniature woodland cyclamen en masse beneath deciduous trees or in shady garden beds for months of cheery colour. In warmer areas, turn to brightly coloured foliage plants such as garden crotons and cordylines for a bit of winter warmth, or drape the vibrant orange trumpet vine over fences and pergolas — it displays fiery tubular flowers through winter and spring.
