Sydney designer Simone Mathews turned an eyesore at the bottom of her garden into a multi-purpose guesthouse with a holiday feel

Simone Mathews has a beautiful house in Cronulla, NSW. At the rear of the property is a stunning studio that the interior designer and SOUL Home founder alternately uses an office, rumpus room and guest accommodation. However, the multi-purpose space wasn’t always so useful. Up until recently it was a ramshackle asbestos-ridden structure of little more than a slab, framework and roof trusses. “We wanted to make good use of the space, rather than just using it as a storeroom,” Simone explains. “And because we’re a family of six, we knew our four boys could enjoy some space away from the main home.
