American pilot Joe Duckworth was the first person to fly through the eye of a hurricane and live to tell about it. His pioneering flight took place on July 27, 1943. One year later the first unit of the Hurricane Hunters was deployed. Today the pilots and scientists who brave the storms aboard these aircraft continue to explore every major hurricane that threatens the U.S. Meteorologists use the data they collect to calculate the force and direction of the storms and predict their path of destruction.
