1 BRACHIAL PLEXUS BLOCK The anesthetic for brachial plexus anesthesia is injected into the neck, above or below the clavicle, or into the armpit. It keeps an upper extremity from feeling pain. 2 LOCAL ANESTHESIA Local anesthesia uses an anesthetic to induce temporary loss of sensation (pain, temperature, pressure, touch) in a specific area of the body. 3 SPINAL ANESTHESIA Spinal anesthesia may be used for operations on the lower half of the body. A local anesthetic is injected into the fluid-filled space between the spinal cord and its outer membrane coverings. That dulls the nerves that supply the pelvic organs and legs. 4 EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA Epidural (peridural) anesthesia is similar to spinal anesthesia, but the anesthetic is injected into the space between the two membranes (the durae) that surround the spinal cord.
