HOW DO YOU ANESTHETIZE A PATIENT?

An hour before the operation, patients receive a sedative (in pill or liquid form). That relaxes them. Then they are rolled in a bed into the surgery preparation room (1). Before any anesthetic is administered, patients are hooked up to equipment that monitors their vital functions, including a blood pressure monitor, an EKG to monitor cardiac frequency (2), and a finger clip that measures oxygen saturation in the blood. Also in the preparation room a venous catheter is inserted, which the anesthesiologist uses to administer the anesthetic (3).
