Which citadel perched on a cliff served as both a lookout and a monastery?
The citadel is built into a cliff 200 feet above Uçhisar, a small town in central Turkey. In olden days the citadel protected the town and housed a military fort. Starting before the time of Christ, countless corridors and rooms were hewn into the soft tufa, providing a home for about 1,000 people—and later even a monastery. Today the cliff is mostly empty, many of the tunnels and rooms having collapsed. But the top of the citadel provides a magnificent panorama that thousands of visitors still flock to see.
