THE PALACE OF A REGICIDE It was one of the most inaccessible places in the entire kingdom. The only way to reach the ancient stronghold of Sigiriya, the rock fortress of Sri Lanka, was to climb the 1,860 steps carved out of this remarkable pillar of rock. There King Kashyapa I lived in fear from 477 to 495 after murdering his father to become king himself. Only there on Lion Rock—660 feet above the surrounding plain—was he able to feel remotely safe from his half-brother Moggallana, the rightful heir from whom he had usurped the throne. But Moggallana returned from India with an army to take control of the fortress. Kashyapa was killed in the battle that ensued, and Lion Rock was ultimately abandoned.
