iD UPDATE: THE ALEXA FILES Just after the March issue went to press, the news broke that charges were being dropped against James Bates, the man discussed in “The Spy in My Living Room.” Bates had been charged with murdering his friend in November of 2015, and investigators from the Bentonville Police Department had asked Amazon to turn over the Alexa voice recordings from the night of the event. Initially Amazon did not wish to comply, on the grounds that providing the confidential data about James Bates’ life would constitute a violation of his consumer rights and of the U.S. Constitution.
