How the replacement for NASA’s Space Shuttle will take us to the Moon and beyond

The primary goals of the Orion spacecraft, which has been contracted to technology company Lockheed Martin by NASA, are to deliver crew and cargo to the International Space Shuttle and return astronauts to the Moon after almost a 50-year wait. Orion made its first test flight in 2014 and is on course to complete a lunar mission by the early 2020s. The Orion crew module is similar in design and appearance to the Apollo Command Module that first took astronauts to the Moon. It is three times the volume of the Apollo module with the same 70° sloped top, deemed to be the safest and most reliable shape for re-entering Earth’s atmosphere at high velocity.
