Off-roaders have taken to the famous Ascot dirt track like hawgs to a mud wallow…and spectators have taken to the action like bees to honey

Talk about giving a new lease on life to an old track — the off-road crowd has now invaded Ascot, and the stands are packed. Dune buggies and four-wheel-drive rigs square off in heats, semi-main, and main events on this venerable “long half-mile” track. About a third of the dirt oval is used, then the course cuts into the infield and involves jumps, dips, sharp turns, and some half-buried utility poles. In three weeks of racing (as this is written), the guys are learning about nerf bar and bumper design, roll cages, and the futility of attempting to keep a fiberglass car intact.
