SPOILERS

The next time you take a ride on one of the big commercial jetliners, take a look out over the top of the wing. You will see a row of neat little square spoilers sticking up in the air stream. When the aircraft flies at high speed, the laminar air flow over the wing reaches almost sonic velocities and tends to pull away from the upper wing surface, thereby destroying lift. These little spoilers slow the air and create a burble that retains lift over the upper trailing edge of the wing. Paradoxically, these spoilers work just the reverse when applied to a nonaerodynamic shape at lower speeds; i.e., your automobile hood.
