Jess Tyree’s ’69 Firebird may be classed as a funny car, but those 7.42 e.t.’s and 199.00-mph trap times are no laughing matter

Jess Tyree is no stronger to the world of drag racing. When it came to building up a funny car, he knew just what was needed to please the spectators and snatch some trophies. Jess selected a rectangular tube chassis (from Mike Leiby Race Cars) which features a unique iso fulcrum-style front suspension for the straight tube axle. The Canadian Pontiac mill boasts 440 cubes, Reath crank, Howard rods, Venolia pistons and rings squeezing a 6.5:1 c.r. The Konig-prepared 6-71 sits atop a Cragar manifold and mounts an Enderle 3-port bugcatcher. Jess relies on a Howard flat tappet cam, Champion plugs, and a B&M Turbo-Hydro to deliver the ponies to 3.90:1 Poncho rear end.
