If our initial look-see is any guide — and it usually is — 1970 is gonna be a good year for muscle cars

AMERICAN MOTORS American Motors President Roy Chap-in claims AMC has “an affinity for 11 cars that are fun to drive.” Their small-sized cars — the Javelin, the AMX, and the new Hornet—meet this description very well, and each has a lot of personality. The Hornet, which replaces the Rambler (also known at one time as the American), exudes more personality than any domestic-made compact (or sub-compact, if you prefer). It’s aimed for the under-$2500 market, but thankfully can be ordered with a 304 V8, SST optional trim, and performance handling pieces. There’ll be more meaty high-performance parts and options for the Hornet in the next few months, so we’ll confine our discussion of the 179-inch-long car to endorsing it as being a very worthwhile automobile.
